Sickness can result in major perturbations in endocrine and metabolic physiology. The disturbance in the hormones can happen as a result of adaptation in response to sickness, and the presence of preexisting endocrine problems can further complicate matters.
This conference session will focus on endocrine and metabolic physiology in sick patients. Issues that will be covered include stress-induced changes in hormones, disturbances in glucose metabolism, changes in thyroid hormones, adrenals, insulin resistance, metabolic adaptations, endocrine tests, and the interpretation of laboratory data in the context of critical illness. The problems of distinguishing between physiological adaptations and true clinical endocrine disorders may be discussed by researchers.
The Diabetes and Endocrinology World Conference will offer an interdisciplinary platform for endocrinologists, critical care physicians, anesthesiologists, lab personnel, and clinical researchers. Issues related to evidence-based approach to the endocrine evaluation, metabolic monitoring, and clinical decision-making will be discussed along with the identification of areas needing further research.
